ROTARY SOWERBY BRIDGE & Foundation

During the past 100 years, The Rotary Foundation has spent $5 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects around the world.

The Rotary Foundation is Rotary’s own charity delivering our vision of a better world.

Foundation has three major functions. It raises money, it enables educational programmes and it gives support to other committees.
For some years the eradication of Polio has been a major objective of the Rotary movement. .Worldwide we met the challenge set by the Gates Foundation which had promised to give $350 million to the Rotary movement if we raised $200 million .In fact that goal was reached so efficiently that an additional gift of $50 million was made by the Foundation in recognition of this achievement. . Polio is still endemic in only three countries .Our Club is proud to have supported this work not only in raising money but also visiting India to take part in immunisation.

Foundation is Rotary’s own charity

  • One of its main objectives is to fight Polio to its final eradication. A strategy is in place to prevent the spread of the wild polio virus in the two endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

  • We transform all gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

  • We donate money to projects home and abroad. In the last few years we have raised money for the Yorkshire Flood Appeal, partnered with other Rotary organisations in Tameside and Guildford to equip an Eye Hospital in Bangladesh and have joined with another in Canada to supply maternity delivery room equipment for a hospital in a poor district of Nairobi.

  • In 2008 the late Nelson Mandela said ‘It is in your hands to make our world a better one for all, especially the poor, vulnerable and marginalised.

  • It is this philosophy that is at the heart of all our activities.
